Cooking Rice | Instant Pot and Stove Top
For both Instant Pot and stove top you’ll want to rinse your rice first. Measure it out, dump it into a colander or strainer and rinse it under a running faucet until the water that comes out the bottom runs clear.
Dump the rice into the Instant Pot or a pot with a well sealing lid.
Instant Pot Instructions
The water to rice ratio that I’ve had good results with is 1:1 for most rice. I might use a smidgen more water for short grain brown rice.
Add your rinsed rice to the inner liner of the Instant Pot. Add the water. Place the lid on and make sure the vent is set to “Sealing”. Press the Manual button (it’s called Pressure Cook on some models) and use your + or – button to set the time. I tend to use the middle of the ranges that you see below, but err on the side of the lower number. You can always check it at the end and if it’s not done and still has liquid in it, add another minute or two.
Brown rice~ 15-20 minutes
White rice~ 3-8 minutes
Basmati or Jasmine rice~ 4-8
Wild rice mix~ 25-30
Trader Joe’s Sprouted Organic California Rice~ 15 minutes.
I always use a natural pressure release of at least 10 minutes. Then check it, if it’s done…fluff it a bit. Serve or allow to keep warm in the Instant Pot. Do be warned though…it will eventually start to stick to the bottom if you leave it on warm for a long time.
Stove Top Instructions
The water to rice ratio that I’ve had the best results with is 1:1.25 (1 cup rice, 1 1/4 cup water) adding in a little extra for short grain brown rice. When I say a little extra, I mean about 1/4 cup or less.
Add the rice and water to the pot. Bring to a boil. As soon as it boils, immediately turn the heat to as low as it goes and put the lid on it. A glass lid is a great way to keep an eye on it without lifting the lid. You don’t want to lift the lid if you can help it. Set a timer using the the times below as your guide.
Brown rice~ 25-30 minutes
White rice~ 16-18 minutes
Basmati or Jasmine rice~ 15 minutes
Wild rice mix~ 45-50 minutes
Trader Joe’s Sprouted Organic California Rice~ 25-30 minutes
Take a peek into the pot at the end of the cooking time. Pull the rice over with a spoon and look to see if all the water has absorbed. If any remains, you can give it another minute or two.
When the rice is done, remove the pot from the heat. Fluff the rice and let sit for 10 minutes to continue to steam.
